Mexican leader denounces capture of Maduro
“We categorically reject intervention in the internal affairs of other countries. The history of Latin America is clear and compelling: intervention has never brought democracy, never generated well-being, nor lasting stability,” Sheinbaum said during a Monday briefing.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured following U.S.-led airstrikes in Caracas on Saturday, which reportedly caused at least 80 deaths. Mexican Foreign Secretary Juan Ramon de la Fuente also criticized the U.S. actions, highlighting what he saw as the UN’s ineffective response to unilateral acts of aggression. “The United Nations remains our primary multilateral structure. It is the best we have. But unfortunately, today it has proven ineffective in trying to contain abuses by hegemonic powers. Hardly more than a voice can be raised to denounce the daily violations of international law,” de la Fuente said.
U.S. President Donald Trump, in connection with the intervention, referenced other Latin American nations as potential targets, including Mexico and Colombia, citing concerns over drug trafficking networks. Regarding Mexico, Trump claimed that Sheinbaum is “terrified” of cartels and suggested the possibility of U.S. military action.
Sheinbaum dismissed any scenario resembling the Venezuelan operation during her press conference, reaffirming Mexico’s stance against foreign intervention.
