Mexico Defends Decision to Suspend Cuba Oil Shipment

(MENAFN) Mexico's government has firmly rejected allegations that external forces influenced its decision to halt a petroleum delivery to Cuba that was originally set for early this month, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum's statements on Tuesday.

The shipment suspension represented a "sovereign decision" made independently without interference from the United States, Sheinbaum emphasized during her regular morning briefing. She stressed that Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), the state-controlled petroleum enterprise responsible for such deliveries, "makes its own decisions" without outside coercion.

Sheinbaum clarified that the timing and logistics of oil transfers are determined according to "what Pemex defines based on the contracts or, in any case, the government's decision regarding humanitarian aid." Despite the suspended shipment, she reaffirmed Mexico's unwavering commitment to supporting the island nation.

The Mexican leader expressed strong criticism of long-standing economic restrictions affecting the Caribbean country. "Cuba has been under a blockade for far too many years, and this blockade has caused supply shortages on the island. Therefore, Mexico has always been, and will continue to be supportive," she said.

The suspended delivery has sparked questions about Mexico's diplomatic balancing act between maintaining its historical alliance with Cuba while navigating its complex relationship with Washington.
