One Dead as Mexico Navy Battles Sinaloa Cartel
Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch disclosed via social media that naval officers came under attack, resulting in one fatality and nine arrests during the armed exchange.
"While personnel from the Ministry of the Navy were conducting surveillance patrols in Sinaloa (state) to prevent crime in the area, they were attacked with gunfire by members of organized crime," Harfuch posted on X, the US social media platform.
Following the repelled assault, authorities confiscated heavy weaponry including high-caliber firearms, a grenade launcher, grenades and 89 explosive devices alongside vehicles and tactical gear. Military forces established a security perimeter and maintained patrol operations to assert territorial dominance.
The ambush unfolded in El Limoncito, a remote rural enclave under the command of Los Chapitos—a Sinaloa Cartel faction helmed by the offspring of imprisoned narcotics lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera.
Culiacan has descended into battlefield conditions following Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada Garcia's July 2024 detention. The arrest fractured the Sinaloa Cartel into rival factions: Los Chapitos, commanded by El Chapo's descendants, and Los Mayos, loyal to El Mayo's network.
The hemisphere's most powerful criminal organization's internecine conflict has triggered soaring murder rates, armed confrontations and abductions.
State authorities documented 1,654 homicides throughout 2025—a 66% surge from 2024's 993 killings.
Sinaloa has simultaneously experienced escalating forced disappearances, totaling 2,320 reported cases. Currently, 1,445 individuals remain unaccounted for.
"The institutions of the Security Cabinet maintain a security operation in the area to protect the population. Operations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided," Harfuch stated.
