President Sheinbaum Mulls Legal Response to Musk’s Cartel Allegations
The comments come amid heightened global focus on Mexico following a military operation on Sunday that killed the leader of the New Generation Jalisco Cartel (CJNG), Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” and sparked subsequent violence across several regions.
“We are considering whether to pursue some kind of legal action. The lawyers are reviewing it. But what matters to me is what the people say, and the vast majority of the public recognizes the work of the armed forces and the work we are doing every day,” Sheinbaum said during her daily press briefing.
Through his social media platform X, Musk stated that Sheinbaum was “just saying what her cartel bosses tell her to say” after a video resurfaced showing the president criticizing US operations targeting suspected drug shipments.
“What matters to us is the Mexican people — their opinion, their recognition, their criticism. Listening to them and always responding, especially to the most vulnerable,” Sheinbaum said in response to Musk’s remarks.
Since the ruling Morena party came to power in 2018 with then-President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, commonly known as AMLO, Mexico has shifted away from the direct military approach to organized crime that was used during the administration of former President Felipe Calderon in 2006, a strategy widely known as the “war on drugs.”
